Panel Discussion

This discussion was backed by the following themes, World Environment Day, Reimagine Recreate Restore, and the United Nations Climate Change Conference in the United Kingdom 2021.

Wendy Gilmour expressed grief over the loss of lives due to tornados in the Mid-Western United States. She briefed about the flood that came on the lower mainland of British Columbia. Gilmour explained that it was more than seasons worth of rain that just happened in three days and resulted in a flood in Canada, affecting people and the country.

She reiterated that the frequency of floods and tornados is increasing and affecting countries and communities pretty badly. She imposed on the need of taking the necessary steps to avoid such disasters caused due to climate change.

She also emphasized the need to bring resilience to the ecosystem in order to avoid such events from happening. The High Commissioner briefed on the steps Canada is taking to avoid the Climate crisis from happening.

These steps are taken from the COP26 meeting that happened earlier in November. These steps include the reduction of emissions by 40 percent, bringing a decrease in the net-zero, and doubling the climate finance for the developing countries.

Wendy Gilmour mentioned the law created by Canada, ‘Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act‘. This Act binds the future governments of Canada to abide by Canada’s goal of reaching the net-zero by 2050.

The Panel discussion highlighted the dire need to protect the climate and to follow the COP26 in order to save the world from an environmental disaster.
