Washington D.C., 21 October 2021 (TDI): The Burmese UN Permanent Representative, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, met with the Deputy Secretary of the United States (US), Wendy Sherman.
The two discussed the prevalent scenario of Myanmar (Burma). It is the responsibility of the international community to speak in unison; against the perfidious situation afflicting Myanmar.
Wendy Sherman on her part urged the world to come together in support of the country. According to her, the unlawful military regime must cease the violence and release all those who are unjustly detained. She said that the regime should address the abuses prevalent in the country. Furthermore, the restoration of inclusive democracy is the only way forward.
While the Burmese Representative appreciated the Deputy Secretary for her support. He lauded the continuous efforts and support of the US for his country. The persistent support of the US has lent impetus to the fight for democracy and freedom.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, is located in South East Asia. It shares contiguity with Thailand, China, Laos, Bangladesh, and India. The country gained independence from the British in 1948.
It was ruled by the armed forces from 1962 until 2011. However, the military again seized power back on 1st February this year. The coup came in the wake of a landslide win by Suu Kyi in a general election.
