Chisinau, 9 September 2023: Hadja Lahbib, the Belgium Minister for Foreign Affairs and European Affairs, marked a significant milestone EU membership by launching the new Embassy of Belgium in Chisinau, Moldova.

Hadja Lahbib stated that the main objective of Belgium’s decision to open its Embassy in Moldova is to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations and extend steadfast support to Moldova on its journey toward European Union membership.

Hadja Lahbib further added that she considered this Embassy launch as an important step in providing a platform for both countries to enhance their collaboration with each other.

Alongside her Moldovan counterpart, Nicu Popescu, they symbolically cut the ribbon during the Embassy’s inauguration. The Embassy will be operational on January 1, 2024, when Belgium achieves the rotating presidency of the European Union.

Hadja Lahbib added that Belgium will assist Moldova in its aspirations to join the European Union but the fulfillment of all strict conditions set by the EU is necessary.

During her meeting, both officials discussed their country’s close relationship and Moldova’s efforts to secure European Union accession in detail.

Apart from this, both dignitaries underscored the matter of Russian aggression in Ukraine exchanged views on the impact of this conflict on Moldova, and also explored different ways to mitigate effects.

Nicu Popescu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova, considered today’s event a significant gesture for the relationship between both countries. 

Nicu Popescu also highlighted the 170 million euros of Belgian investments in the country and there are 120 Moldovan companies operating with Belgian capital, he added.

The diplomatic relations between Belgium and Moldova started in March 1992, and to date, they have signed a total of 32 bilateral treaties
