Beijing 2022 Paralympics Winter Games: An Overview

Beijing, 3 March 2022 (TDI): Beijing is going to conduct the Paralympics Winter Games where the world’s best 600 athletes will take part.

The games will start on March 4. It is pertinent to note that Beijing is the first country to host both the winter and summer games.

Vision

The theme of the Paralympic Winter Games is ‘Joyful Rendezvous upon Pure Ice and Snow’. These games will promote the values of the Paralympic and Olympics along with paying homage to the traditions of China. However, Beijing also successfully conducted the Paralympic Games of 2008.

Disciplines of Sports

Along these lines, this year Beijing Winter Paralympics will comprise ten days. It will start on 4th March and will end on 13th March. Considering the current state of events, the world’s best athletes will take part in seventy-eight different events.

However, Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games have two categories i.e., ice sports and snow sports. Ice sports include wheelchair curling and para ice hockey whereas snow sports include snowboarding, cross-country, alpine skiing, and biathlon.

Zones

In the same vein, Paralympic Winter Games have three competitive zones and six avenues. The zones include Zhangjiakou, Yanqing, and central Beijing. In this context, two avenues are the legacy avenues of the 2008 Olympics and Paralympics as well i.e., National Indoor Stadium and the National Aquatic Centre.

National Indoor Stadium is famous for para ice hockey while the National Aquatic Centre organizes Wheelchair curling.

Mascot

This year, the mascot of the Beijing Winter Paralympics is Shuey Rhon Rhon (雪容融). In this regard, Shuey Rhon Rhon gives various meanings. “Shuey” depicts a Chinese Character for Snow whereas the first “Rhon” means to tolerate. In addition to that, the second “Rhon” means to warm, fuse or melt.

Collectively, the full name “Shuey Rhon Rhon” means togetherness or greater inclusivity. Perhaps, inclusivity brings impairments within the society. This concept also shows understanding and dialogue among different cultures around the globe.

Traditionally, Shuey Rhon Rhon is a lantern child of Chinese culture.  In particular, the glow emits from the heart of Shuey Rhon Rhon. The logo winter Paralympics represents this glow. Subsequently, it shows courage, friendship, warmth, and the perseverance of athletes.

The 2022 Paralympic Torch

Most importantly, the 2022 Paralympic Torch is called “Flying” (飞扬 Fei Yang in Chinese). The torch bears the Olympic legacy and resembles a giant scroll. Eventually, its Color combination includes gold and silver. Furthermore, it symbolizes “glory and dreams” and the Chinese values of courage, innovation, equality, and inspiration.

The emblem is settled on the mid-section of the torch. The gold line on the torch represents Great Wall, Skiing events, and humanity’s search for excellence, enlightenment, and peace.

Similarly, the torch is made up of carbon-fiber materials. As a result, it is resistant to high temperatures and is emission-free. Above all, this Winter Paralympics is green and high-tech. The torch of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games is decorated with the Official title at its lower side.

Torch Ceremony

On 2 March, the organizing team the of Beijing 2022 Paralympics Winter Games held a torch ceremony where 565 torchbearers participated.  During the Torch Relay, the event displayed a unique feature as well. The torchbearers will exchange the flame through ribbon construction. This feature ensures the vision of the Beijing Winter Olympics which suggests respecting cultural values.

Emblem

The official emblem of the Paralympics represents the Chinese character for ‘fly’. Officially, Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games are called “leaps”. Its design image represents an athlete in a wheelchair. It also personifies the spirit of the athlete whose sole aim is to gain victor or cross the finishing line. Further, the artist ‘Lin Cunzhen’ has created this emblem.

Within 24 hours, the organizing team of the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympics will hold the official opening ceremony.
