Azerbaijan hosted the first Youth Summit of Non-Aligned Movement

Baku, 26 July 2022 (TDI): The Youth Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) kicked off on Monday. Azerbaijan organized this Youth summit of NAM for the first time. The Summit is attended by over 60 young representatives from NAM’s member states.

Purpose of the Summit

The main agenda of the Summit is to discuss making NAM’s Youth Network an international organization. It will also feature interactive discussions among NAM youth on global problems.

Participants will also discuss about stimulation of the NAM model and attend a training session on the effective management of organizations. If the transformation of NAM’s Youth Network is confirmed, then the summit will also decide about its flag and logo.

First day of Summit

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, addressed the summit on the first day. Different heads of State sent video messages to the participants. Additionally, delegates presented their statements after reviewing NAM’s Youth Network activities.

Head of the Azerbaijani Delegation to the Youth Summit, Azer Aliyev, and the Chairperson of NAM youth network Ordukhan Gahramanzada greeted the Summit’s participants. They also introduced the youth policy of Azerbaijan and explained the measures taken within this framework for youth development.

Azerbaijan’s President Address

Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, Farid Gayibov read out the address by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chair of NAM, Ilham Aliyev to the participants.

He welcomed everyone to the Summit. He also described the importance of the Summit and said that “The young generation is the leading cause of social development and prosperity of every country”.

Additionally, he said that he was proud of the young generation of Azerbaijan which makes up 23% of its population because they have done invaluable services for the country.

UNGA’s 76th session President’s address

The President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Abdulla Shahid also addressed the Youth Summit. He also emphasized that only the youth can help in establishing a stronger groundwork for an inclusive, relevant, and sustainable future for all.

He said that the young generation today makes up nearly 2 billion. This is the largest generation in entire history yet their role is marginalized from COVID to climate. Consequently, he also said that young people should be given ownership to participate in decision-making processes.

ICYF President’s Address

Similarly, Taha Ayhan, President of the Islamic Cooperation Youth Forum (ICYF) also addressed the Summit. He hopes that the Summit would help in strengthening youth’s presence around the globe.

Additionally, he expressed his confidence in the youth that they would express their power by playing a critical role in development.

 

Delegates Addresses

Acting Chair of NAM Youth Network, Ordukhan Gahramanzade presented the timeline of all the activities carried out by NAM since its establishment in 2021.

A member of NAM Youth Network’s National Chapter in Zimbabwe, Abiel Elson Mawere also addressed the Summit. He thanked Azerbaijan for organizing the event.

Additionally, he said that it is important that young people from different states come together to find solutions to problems in the post-pandemic era.

The Summit will last till the 29th of July. The closing ceremony of the Summit will be attended by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. Participants of the Summit will visit Shusha city on the last day of the event.
