AU condemns Russia in special meeting of UNSC

New York, 1 March 2022 (TDI): African countries condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by using the UN Security Council floor. In the special meeting of the UN Security Council not only did the Western countries condemn Russia’s invasion, but African countries also participated equally. 

According to the African Mission to the UN, the three African countries unanimously condemned the ongoing humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

Gabon, Kenya, and Ghana’s A3 condemned Ukraine’s security and humanitarian situation. They called for an immediate cease-fire and de-escalation of the current situation. 

Moreover, they focused on following and respect for international law. They emphasized on implementation of the golden guidelines provided by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights. 

African in Ukraine 

The three African countries also vilified the mistreatment of African people in Ukraine. Demanding equitable treatment and dignity for all the victims.

No human being should be discriminated against based on color or race, stated in the statement. The issue of discrimination came to the surface on 27 February, when some Nigerian students were discriminated against along the Poland border.

Nigerian government showed a strong reaction while criticizing discrimination at the time of war. The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, said that,

“All who flee a conflict situation have the same right to the safe passage under UN convention and the color of their passport or their skin should make no difference”

Security Council Meeting

The United Nations Security Council on Sunday called for a rare emergency special session of the 193-members of the General Assembly. Except four, all members of the UN Security Council, including African countries Ghana, Kenya, and Gabon voted in favor of a rare emergency special session.

The resolution calling for General Assembly’s rare emergency special session was adopted with 11 yes votes. However, Russia voted no, while China, India, and the United Arab Emirates were absent from the meeting.

All members of the UNSC condemned war and the growing humanitarian crisis. African countries including Gabon, Kenya, and Ghana took part in condemning the humanitarian and security situation in Ukraine.

Gabon’s Representative to the UN stated that the government of Gabon does not want a war against a United Nations Member State.
