Beijing, 9 February 2022 (TDI): Argentina has officially declared to join the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The decision was made on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of China-Argentina diplomatic ties.

Leaders from both countries expressed their willingness to further deepen bilateral collaboration as well as collaboration between China and Latin America.

Recently, the Chinese President, Xi Jinping met with the Argentine President, Alberto Fernandez in Beijing. Fernandez was visiting China to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Whilst there he also attended the banquet hosted by Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of People. All the leaders visiting China for the opening ceremony were attending the event.

A joint statement was issued after the meeting on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Argentina with the signing of a series of documents for future collaboration.

Officials from China and Argentina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on collaboration within the framework of the BRI with the aim to promote the construction of the BRI in Argentina.

In addition, the MoU focuses on cooperation in various fields, including unimpeded trade, policy communication, people-to-people exchanges, connectivity, financial integration, and third-party markets.

During the meeting with the Argentine President, Xi stressed that the two countries ought to collaborate on new as well as pre-existing projects like the hydropower plants and railways. Likewise, full play should be given to their complementary benefits to boost cooperation.

Aside from that, the two countries also signed cooperation documents for green development, aerospace, the digital economy, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, agriculture, and technological innovation.
