Dhaka, 9 August 2022 (TDI): The Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs of the US, Michele Sison, called on Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Masud bin Momen, on Monday afternoon.

The American Diplomat extended good wishes to Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary and congratulated him on the 50 years celebrations of Bangladesh-USA diplomatic relations.
During the discussions, both the dignitaries referred to robust multilateral engagements between the two countries. Both sides candidly discussed various multilateral issues of mutual interests.
One prominent issue discussed during the meeting concerned priority issues, particularly in the United Nations and other international organizations. Some other issues and views were discussed on peacekeeping operations, food security, global health emergencies, climate resilience, and the Rohingya issue.
The Diplomat praised Bangladesh’s humanitarian gesture toward the FDMNs (Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals). On this issue, Foreign Secretary Momen briefed about the idea of not hosting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh long-term. He further urged the international community to focus on the immediate safe return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
The Diplomat also highly praised Bangladesh’s success in countrywide Covid-19 vaccination and ensuring food security. She also appreciated Bangladesh’s contribution to peacekeeping operations, particularly women’s participation in these peacekeeping operations.
Both sides also discussed the upcoming elections in multilateral fora. After the meeting, Assistant Secretary Sison attended a luncheon hosted by the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh.

Before this meeting, a discussion session was held between cabinet ministers from the Bangladesh government and the American delegation led by Assistant Secretary Sison at Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs office.
During this meeting, similar issues were discussed, including G77 (Group of 77) dynamics and Bangladesh-US partnership in UNESCAP.
The delegation led by Diplomat Sison also attended a roundtable discussion at the BIISS (Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies) in the afternoon.
