Guatemala City, 31 August 2022 (TDI): The President of FIFA (the international governing body of football), Gianni Infantino, paid an official visit to Guatemala on Tuesday.

Gianni Infantino arrived in Guatemala City at dawn on Tuesday, where he was received by the President of the National Football Federation of Guatemala (Fedefut Guate or FENAFUTG), Gerardo Paiz.

The first activity in the busy schedule of the FIFA President included the visit to the Fedefut Guate facilities, at Fedefut Guate the FIFA President met with the Executive Committee and the representatives of the Guatemala football community.

At Fedefut Guate headquarters, President Gianni Infantino received the jerseys of the National League teams, Xelajú MC and Cobán Imperial, as a gift.

As per the official statement from Fedefut Guate, the stay of the FIFA leader will allow the strengthening of future sports and administrative projects for the growth of soccer and the different processes of national teams.

Meeting with the Guatemala President

During his visit to the Central American country, the President of FIFA also met with the President of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei.

During the meeting, the promotion of sports projects for the benefit of children and youth, including bringing soccer to schools, improving the lighting of fields in neighborhoods, and the construction of a multifunctional sports complex was agreed upon, Giammattei said.

Gianni Infantino also promised the support of the organization to obtain the necessary funds for the construction of a multifunctional sports complex. Moreover, the FIFA President also visited football stadiums across Guatemala City.

The so-called colossus of zone 5 seemed “beautiful” to FIFA President Infantino, but he classified the structure as old and also talked about the prospect of organizing world-class events in Guatemala.

On this occasion, the FIFA President said “Of course, as a football fan, I am passionate about these stadiums, they remind me of the 50s, but times pass, and to be at the forefront you need to improve yourself”.

The conversation with the President of Guatemala was essential for this idea, I think we have taken the first step, he assured.

The FIFA President traveled to Guatemala City from Nicaragua, before that he was in Costa Rica and will conclude his Central American tour in Belize. Just a week earlier, Fatma Samoura, Secretary General of FIFA, also paid an official visit to Guatemala.
