Ambassador Khalid reveals long-term oil deal with Russia

Moscow, 23 November 2023 (TDI): The newly appointed Ambassador of Pakistan to Russia, Muhammad Khalid Jamali revealed in his first exclusive interview that Pakistan and Russia are currently engaged in discussions to finalize the technical intricacies of a significant long-term contract for the supply of Russian oil. 

He remarked that the relations between Russia and Pakistan are developing in a positive direction. He also said to continue the work of his predecessors and to focus on developing trade and economic interaction. 

During his interview, he expressed a consensus in Pakistan to have good relations with Russia. He also added that Russia is a particularly important global player, and it can play a crucial role in the region especially when it comes to Afghanistan. 

While discussing the energy requirement of Pakistan, the Ambassador highlighted that both countries are actively involved in negotiations on cooperation in the energy sector. He said that Pakistan has no objection to Russia’s participation in any form in which it might participate. 

Furthermore, the Ambassador said that the first pilot of crude oil from Russia reached in July this year. Also, the private sector is interacting with Russian partners and buying oil. And soon the third shipment of oil which is on its way will be delivered to Pakistan. 

The Ambassador underscored that Pakistan is currently considering all options in terms of currency used in trade. Historically, he said, we used to have barter trade. Therefore, the issue of payment will definitely be resolved.

Ambassador Jamali, highlighted the remarkable surge in bilateral trade, citing statistics that indicated a 88.9% increase. Bilateral trade between the countries surged to US $733.8 million this year compared to US$388.5 million last year.

Notably, Pakistani exports amounted to US$88.5 million, while Russian imports to Pakistan surged to US$645.2 million, marking a notable 154% increase over the previous year.

In response to a question about joining BRICS, the Ambassador said that we have already applied for its membership and are in contact with member countries including Russia for assistance. 

The Ambassador pointed out that Pakistan is expected to join the association under Russia’s chairmanship in 2024.

On inquiry about the construction of the Pakistan Stream gas pipeline project. The Ambassador said that both sides are committed to this project.  

Moreover, both countries have already signed a memorandum on the construction of the Pakistan Stream. Like other projects in the energy sector, negotiations are underway to determine the framework of implementation of this project. 

On a question about a joint Pakistan-Russia film or series, the Ambassador while appreciating the idea expressed his amazement at the success of Pakistani films and TV series in Russia. He also applauded Russian animation in movies.
