Zelensky Flags Potential Risks of US Peace Plan for Ukraine

Kyiv (TDI): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenky has expressed reservations over a recently released US proposal to end the war in Ukraine. He warned that Ukraine risks compromising its sovereignty or losing a key strategic partner.

In a national address on Friday, Zelensky described the current situation as one of the most difficult moments in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to balance national interest with diplomatic engagement.

The 28-point framework drafted by the Trump administration reportedly includes provisions that Kyiv had previously rejected, such as ceding the control of eastern territories currently held by Ukraine, substantially reducing the size of its armed forces, refraining from future NATO membership and holding snap elections.

The draft also envisages de-facto Russian control over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and the southern Crimea Peninsula, while proposing sanctions relief and reintegration of Russia into global economic forums as the G8.

Zelensky stresses that Ukraine would seek alternatives approved through diplomatic channels, noting ongoing consultations with US Vice President JD Vance and plans for a direct consultation with President Donald Trump.

“We’re not making loud statements, we’ll be calmly working with America and all the partners offering alternatives,” he said. He also highlighted Ukraine’s reliance on US-supplied military systems, intelligence and air defense capabilities to counter Russian assaults.

European allies, including the United Kingdom, France and Germany, have voiced cautious support for the Ukrainian position. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the importance of preserving Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and maintaining the current front lines as the reference for negotiations.

Moscow has perceived the plan favorable; President Putin indicated flexibility but also reiterated his commitment to continuing military operations. Kremlin officials are of the view that Ukraine’s negotiation latitude diminishes with territorial losses

The White House maintains that the plan represents a viable framework for both parties while Trump also gave Ukraine a deadline until November 27 to respond to the proposal; with the possibility of extending the deadline depending on progress.

Zelensky reiterated his commitment to national sovereignty and warned that internal and external pressures must not compromise the country’s long-term strategic interests.
