Celebrated annually on May 17, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) marks the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1865.
This day highlights the crucial role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in today’s interconnected world and emphasizes the need for inclusive and equitable access.
Moreover, this observance underlines the significance of ICTs in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability.
WTISD also serves as a platform to raise awareness about the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other ICTs can bring to societies and economies, as well as ways to bridge the digital divide.

One of the primary focuses of WTISD is addressing the digital divide, the gap between those who have access to modern information and communication technology and those who do not. This divide often correlates with socioeconomic status, geography, and education levels.
During the day, different international and regional organizations took to social media platforms to deliver their thoughts about the occasion.
According to the United Nations, “Bridging the digital divide is key for creating a more equitable world where everyone has access to the transformative power of digital technologies.”
Additionally, the secretary general of the African Telecommunication Union stated regarding the day, “On this World Information Society Day, let us be inspired by the stories of transformation and resilience that ICTs have enabled.
And let us work together to ensure that the benefits of the digital age are shared by every individual, community, and nation across Africa.”
Moreover, UNDP Egypt expressed their views on the day, “Bridging the digital divide is crucial for creating a more equitable world where everyone, everywhere, has access to the transformative power of digital technologies.”
The observance of WTISD is marked by a variety of activities worldwide, including conferences and Workshops, Educational Programs, Public awareness programs, and exhibitions and demonstrations.
Furthermore, ICTs are instrumental in advancing the SDGs. For instance, they enable access to quality education through online learning platforms, improve healthcare delivery via telemedicine, and support economic growth by fostering digital entrepreneurship.
