New York, 5 December 2022 (TDI): Today the world commemorates International Volunteers Day on Social and Economic Development. The Day is celebrated annually on 5th December.

The day is designated to honor the contributions made by volunteers to the improvement of their communities, economies, and environments. On this day, the general public concentrates on issues that are important to their neighborhoods.

Volunteerism first appeared in medieval Europe, when caring for the ill and religion coexisted. In nations like England, hundreds of hospitals run by churches provided care for lepers and plague victims.

By the 18th century, volunteering was more about participating in the military than it was about helping the community. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, organized volunteering actually started.

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) approved the resolution recognizing International Volunteer Day in 1985.

The day has given organizations, governments, foundations, and individuals the chance to establish and achieve goals as well as to acknowledge the contributions of volunteers from all sorts of backgrounds.
