Islamabad/Sukkur, 18 October 2022 (TDI): The World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Pakistan, Dr. Palitha Mahipala, shared that the WHO is supporting health service deliveries in Flood affected areas of Sindh.
This is being done through the provision of essential medicines, supply of medical equipment and nutritional supplements, and renovating and refurbishing of damaged health infrastructure in the province.
The organization is taking these measures in close coordination with the Department of Health.
Dr. Mahipala made these remarks while addressing a ceremony of handing over essential medicines and supplies to the Sindh health department in WHO Sukkur Hub.
The Director-General Health of Sindh, Dr. Muhammad Juman Bahoto, received the consignment on behalf of the Sindh Health department.
The Head of WHO Sub Office Sindh, Dr. Sara Salman, the District Health Officers of Sukkur and Larkana Divisions, and Medical Superintendents of various hospitals were also present on the occasion.
Remarks of the WHO Representative
Dr. Mahipala said that the floods and rain emergency had caused widespread losses to lives and property. He highlighted that the most affected area is health infrastructure. 2000 health facilities had been damaged, which is 12 percent of the total health facilities in the country.
He also said that the WHO will continue to support the health department by helping with control of the spread of malaria and water-borne diseases and establishing 19 Nutrition Stabilization Centers (NSC) to mitigate the effects of malnourishment in children.
Remarks of the Director-General Health of Sindh
While Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Muhammad Juman Bahoto, thanked WHO for its active role in relief and rehabilitation efforts for the flood-affected people in Sindh.
He said that with the support of, the Sindh health department has been able to establish many health camps and reached areas and people still under water. He said the health department had established centers to cater to over 10 million affected people in the province with support from WHO.
On this occasion, THQ hospital Rohri was also given essential equipment for the labor room and gyne ward. Moreover, essential medicines and nutritional supplements were provided to Sheikh Zaid Women and Children Hospital Larkana.
