Vice President of EU meets Russian Foreign Minister

-

New York, 24 September 2021 (TDI): Yesterday, Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Union, met with Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Federation’s Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th session.

They talked about the relationship of the European Union and Russia, as well as current global concerns.

VP Borell further said that while the EU and Russia have substantial differences, they must work together on a number of foreign policy matters for the sake of world security and stability.

VP Borrell discussed some of the problems in the EU and Russia relationship with the goal of making the relationship more secure and predictable. Disagreements persist, particularly over Russia’s breaches of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as in the areas of democracy and human rights, cyber, disinformation, and other hybrid threats.

The conversation was on international problems where the EU and Russia should continue to work together to solve global security concerns such as the situation in Afghanistan, Libya, and Mali, as well as the Middle East Peace Process and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
