Washington D.C., 15 November 2021 (TDI): The United States is set to host the ninth North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS) on November 18, 2021, at the White House, Washington D.C. The event is aimed at strengthening cooperation between Mexico, Canada, and the US in various fields.
Significance of the Summit
The event will mark the first face-to-face meeting between US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador. The Summit is being organized to make North America a more egalitarian, prosperous, and secure region.
The trilateral meeting comes after Washington ended most of its pandemic-related border restrictions to vaccinated Mexican and Canadian travelers, thus, lifting a 19-month ban on non-essential land crossings from both states.
Areas of Discussion
During the Summit, the respective leaders will exchange views on numerous topics; including health security, competitiveness, economic recovery and integration, issues related to migration, climate change, and development for a safe region.
While in Washington, Covid-19 will be one of the major topics of discussion amongst the North American leaders. They will exchange views on the issue of health security amid the pandemic, besides emphasizing collective efforts to promote universal access to vaccines.
Moreover, the officials will hold discussions on the regional and global responsibilities of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, particularly regarding climate change and the issue of inequitable access to resources.
In this regard, the problems of how to tackle the climate crisis, achieve equitable economic growth, and strengthen supply chains in North America will be addressed.
