US secures big win in UN budget talks

New York, 1 January 2024 (TDI): The United States secured a big win in the UN budget talks 2023. The US mission to the UN releases a fact sheet that quotes successful negotiations in the UN General Assembly Fifth Committee.

The meeting took place on 22nd December 2023. Under this fact sheet, the US and its allies conclude 2023 with several successes.

The fact sheet shared on the platform, US Asia Pacific Media Hub, said, “The US and its allies concluded 2023 with successes during the UNGA 5th Committee session.” Furthermore, it added, “An approval of 2024 UN regular budget of $3.6 billion for rationalizing of Peacebuilding Funds among other achievements.”

Approval of 2024 UN Regular Budget

The Fifth Committee approved a $3.6 billion program budget that funds the UN Secretariat, including functions vital to promoting human rights, disarmament, international development, and special political missions. Furthermore, the budget represents a 1.6 percent increase over the 2023 budget.

Peace-building Funds

The US led the way in reaching an agreement to provide $50 million in assessed funding (beginning in 2025) for Peace-building. Consequently, this will prevent conflicts right before they begin. This approach will prove to save lives and money.

Human Rights Funding

On the 75th Anniversary of UDHR, the US succeeded in creating 38 new positions to advance human rights around the globe.

Special Political Missions

Funding was approved for 37 special political missions supporting peace and conflict prevention. Supporting, partnerships between US and regional organizations. Moreover, the establishment of positions in the Office of the Special Adviser on Prevention of Genocide is stressed.

Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) and Sexual Harassment (SH): 

The US successfully fought against efforts to contest SEA and SH investigations. Additionally, it provides a zero-tolerance policy for perpetrators whilst protecting the dignity of survivors.

Lastly, the US mission to the UN is located at 799 Plaza across the street from UN Headquarters.
