Washington DC, 21 October 2022 (TDI): The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with the Foreign Minister of Italy, Luigi Di Maio.

Secretary Blinken bid farewell to the Italian Foreign Minister. The farewell is in advance of the seating of the new government in Italy.

The US Secretary of State also appreciated Foreign Minister Di Maio’s principled leadership for the foreign policy of his country. Under the direction of Maio, foreign policy has met historic challenges, including the global response to the Ukrainian crisis.

Foreign Policy of Italy

The foreign policy of Italy like any other country is focused on several priority areas. This includes geographical factors, international cooperation, international organizations & forums, legal diplomacy, and focusing on European Union & global themes.

Being a member of the European Union and G7 state, Italy has presented several joint statements against the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The foreign policy of the country in this regard under the leadership of Luigi Di Maio had been upright.

US-Italy Relations

The diplomatic relations between both countries were established in 1861 and later reestablished in 1944. Since then both states enjoy friendly ties.

Italy is an active transatlantic partner of the US and has sought to boost democratic ideals and cooperation. Italy and US are partners in combating human and drug trafficking, and terrorism.

In peacekeeping and military operations around the world, Italy is the leader. In addition to this, both states have been fighting challenges including the coronavirus, Ebola outbreak, and ISIS.

Both states are part of international organizational structures. They are a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Likewise, the two are also members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, G-20, G-7, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization.

As a part of G7, both states cooperate on economic issues. Both countries are important trade partners with two-way trade valued at $103.112 billion in 2019.
