Mexico City, 7 March 2023 (TDI): The United States (US) government released a statement in which it expressed concerns over the escalating conflict between Cancun taxi drivers and Uber.
The US government said that this conflict may have foreign tourists wondering about the safest ways to get around.
The conflict between Cancun taxi drivers and Uber is the result of Uber’s emergence as a competitor in the traditional taxi industry. Factually, Uber’s popularity has been increasing due to its lower fares, convenience, and perceived safety.
Thus, it has led to resentment and opposition from traditional taxi drivers, who feel that Uber is taking away their livelihoods and diminishing the value of their service offerings.
Since then, the government has begun cracking down on Uber operations, further fueling the conflict between the two sides.
The conflict has grown increasingly tense, as taxi drivers have taken to blocking roads and preventing Uber drivers from picking up passengers.
For the record, the Mexican government has attempted to mediate negotiations between the two sides, but so far both sides remain entrenched in their positions.
Thus, it remains to be seen how the situation will develop, and what the long-term implications for tourists and local transportation in Cancun will be.
The US State Department has encouraged the Mexican government to take action to ensure the safety of both drivers and passengers.
Also, it has called on Uber to comply with local regulations in order to preserve the ability of customers to safely travel around the city.
In the same vein, the US Embassy in Mexico has issued warnings to US citizens in Cancun to exercise caution when using ground transportation services.
Tips for foreign tourists to safely take a taxi in Cancun
If you’re hailing one on the street in Cancun, keep an eye out for a few things that ensure a taxi is legitimate. All official taxis have specific coloring.
In Cancun and Playa del Carmen, taxis are white with green lines. In Cozumel, Tulum, and Playa Mujeres, they are white with red lines.
Taxi drivers have an official uniform given by the union – it’s a white shirt with a green taxi syndicate logo in the chest pocket area.
Moreover, every taxi has an identification number marked on the side. Taxis should have two license plates – on the front and back of the car.
Likewise, the safest way to get around Mexico’s Caribbean coastline is to use apps such as Moovit or Beat which allow users to order private rides without the risk of being harassed or attacked by taxi drivers.
These apps are safer alternatives to Uber and offer a secure way for travelers to explore the region without fear of danger.
Additionally, using public transportation options, such as buses and taxis from trusted companies, is recommended for visitors.
