Kingston, 17 December 2021(TDI): Jamaica received from the United States the third tranche of 204,750 Pfizer vaccines doses. This donation is to help Jamaica fight the COVID-19 Pandemic. This shipment arrived on the 16 of December of this year.
Moreover, with these new vaccines, the total donation of the US reach 615,000 doses. This donation is a way for the US to reaffirm its commitment to support Jamaica in the battle against COVID-19.
The initial donation arrived four months ago in August. It was composed of 208,260 doses and complements of syringes, needles, and dilutants. These vaccines donations are part of the commitment of the Biden-Harris administration to share the American vaccines supply and help other countries battling it.
Jamaica and US relationship
In 1962, the United States established diplomatic relations with Jamaica., following its independence from the United Kingdom. Their relationship is based on trust and mutual interest.
Both work closely to enhance peace and mutual prosperity. Both parties have representatives in their respective countries, Jamaica has its embassy in Washington DC, and the US has its embassy in Kingston.
The United States is Jamaica’s most important trading partner. More than 100 US firms have offices and sell products. In addition to that, the large Majority of Jamaican-Americans send over three billion dollars of remittance. Regarding Jamaica, 80 percent of its export go to the US.
Apart from diplomatic and economic relations, the US assists in the Island. The assistance is made through USAID, this organization that works to help the island deal with disaster risk, battle crime & violence, and health issues such as HIV/AIDS.
In the course of the pandemic, the US government provided assistance to address the effect of this pandemic, and this third shipment is one of the help the US sent to the Island.
In the multilateral areas, both countries interact through the United Nations, the Organization of American States, Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI), the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), International Monetary Fund (IMF), world bank, and World the Trade Organization(WTO).
