Baghdad, 5 September 2022 (TDI): The United States (US) Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara A. Leaf took an official tour to Iraq along with other Middle Eastern states. During the visit, she held bilateral talks with the government officials of Iraq.

Meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister

Assistant Secretary Barbara Leaf met the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, and focused on several bilateral issues. The official of the US State Department assured Iraqi Prime Minister Al-Kadhimi of the continuous support.

Assistant Secretary Leaf added that the US will assist Iraq in the current political and economic developments.

She further said that the US government will support Iraq to resolve its crisis by initiating constructive dialogue. She also assured US support for the well-being of the Iraqi people.

Interacting with Iraqi President

Assistant Secretary Leaf also held a meeting with the President of Iraq, Braham Salih. The talks focused on matters of bilateral interests. The discussion also focused on the concerned areas that impact the people of Iraq.

Barbara Leaf stressed the necessity of the issues like human rights and the eradication of corruption. She affirmed the US’s support to Iraq in such areas.

Meeting with Iraq’s Parliamentary Speaker

The third bilateral meeting by Assistant Secretary Leaf was with the Speaker of Parliament of Iraq, Muhammad Al Halboosi. During the meeting, the two dignitaries’ discussion focused on the controlling current political turmoil in Iraq.

Assistant Secretary Leaf had shown concern to bring a viable solution to the current crisis in Iraq in the following meeting.

The support for Iraq was assured by the US Assistant Secretary under the mutually accepted terms of the “strategic framework agreement for a Relationship of Friendship and cooperation.”

The Agreement was signed between the two countries in Baghdad in November 2008 and was entered into force on January 1, 2009.

According to an official statement by the US government, the Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs, Barbara A. Leaf will take official visits to Tunisia, Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, and Iraq from August 29 to September 9.
