Islamabad, 27 October 2023 (TDI): US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome called on Prime Minister of Pakistan, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar to discuss the safe Afghan resettlement process to the US, on October 26.
The development occurred as Pakistan’s November 1 deadline for illegal immigrants in the country to leave or face deportation looms closer.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar highlighted the Government’s efforts in critical areas such as economic stability, the repatriation of illegal foreigners, and the ongoing electoral process.
Earlier this month, Pakistan announced in response to an increase in terrorist assaults, mostly blamed on Afghan nationals.
Washington has deemed some Afghan citizens in Pakistan suitable for resettlement in the United States, but they are among those who face expulsion.
These individuals from Afghanistan worked alongside the United States and its allies before 2021.
“Including impending national elections, regional issues, and the safe and effective processing of Afghan citizens eligible for resettlement to the United States,” said US Mission Spokesperson Jonathan Lalley.
Washington and Islamabad were previously strong friends, but over time, their relationship gradually worsened, mostly as a result of US worries over Pakistan’s alleged backing for the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Islamabad has long been viewed with distrust by Washington, despite its strong denials that it has provided sanctuary to the Taliban.
