UNODC Pakistan calls for prison reform on Nelson Mandela Day

-

Islamabad, 18 July 2021 (TDI) :  In a special tribute to Nelson Mandela Day, UNODC Pakistan Representative Jeremy Milsom highlights “the Nelson Mandela Rules” in a bid to call for prison reform.

“This day is observed to raise awareness of the UN standing minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners also known as the Nelson Mandela Rules. The rules promote humane prison conditions, the value of prison staff, and prisoners as a continuous part of society. UNODC has been assisting the Government of Pakistan with different strategies and technologies to improve the living conditions in prisons. This includes health services and interventions for HIV intervention treatment and care in line with the Nelson Mandela Rules,” said Mr. Milsom.

The message supports the wider range of UNODC goals for the rule of law in promoting a safe developing society in Pakistan.
