New York, 20 September 2021 (TDI): During the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the EU’s annual priorities are to promote effective multilateral governance and a United Nations fit for the twenty-first century. Today, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, will meet with High Representative/Vice President Josep Borrell, President Ursula von der Leyen, and President Charles Michel. Later in the evening, VP Borrell would preside over the EU Foreign Affairs Ministers’ traditional informal gathering.
Tomorrow, VP Borrell will attend the opening session of the 76th UN General Assembly’s General Debate, as well as a Ministerial meeting on the Libya Peace Process to address ongoing efforts to contribute to the implementation of the ceasefire and in light of the approaching elections.
As part of the EU and its Member States’ efforts to engage with Afghanistan’s neighbors and regional partners, VP Borrell will chair the inaugural meeting of the Regional Platform on Afghanistan on Thursday. Then, during the virtual Ministerial Conference on Article XIV of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, VP Borrell will make a remark.
The General Assembly provides an important opportunity for the international community to chart a course for the future. Racism, intolerance, inequality, climate change, poverty, hunger, and armed conflict all need international action. The EU supports the efficient implementation of UN reforms and is actively engaged in the follow-up process on “Our Common Agenda,” which began last year with the adoption of the political statement at the event of the UN’s 75th anniversary high-level conference.
