New York, 5 October 2021 (TDI): Haiti has been facing peace, stability, security, and sustainable development issues, and the UN office in Haiti worries over the situation. They have discussed with the Security Council that Haiti needs protection and stability.
Haiti has been facing one of the most fraught periods of time, according to the UN. The country has been affected by natural disasters like earthquakes. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake shook the country and affected over 800,000 people in the southwestern peninsula. Special Representative and head of the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), Helen La Lime said that national and local elections of the country have been delayed because of the insecurity that has become flourishing in Port-au-Prince.
The numbers of cases of Kidnapping are once again on the rise and gangs have increased their control over large swaths of the city. Helena La Lime also mentioned that with the current forced return of Haiti migrants from the US-Mexico border, most of them had simply “wanted a better livelihood in neighboring countries”. However, UN officials are urging Member states to ensure that Haiti doesn’t turn into forgotten crises and also want them to contribute to the $187.3 million Flash Appeal for people who are affected by the earthquake and the $235.6 million 2021-2022 for the Humanitarian Response Plan.
