New York, 23 April 2022 (TDI): The United Nations Secretary-General (UN-SG) Antonio Guterres has announced meetings with the Foreign Ministers and Presidents of Russia and Ukraine during his visit to both countries next week. The spokesperson for Secretary-General Eri Kaneko has shared the news. The meeting aims to restore peace in Ukraine urgently.
The correspondent notes state that the UN Secretary-General will have a working meeting and lunch with the Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov and meet President Putin in Moscow.
While sharing his views on the matter, the UN Secretary-General said that “we need urgent steps to save lives, end human suffering, and bring about peace in Ukraine.”
In another statement, the UN spokesperson also announced Mr. Guterres’s visit to Ukraine next week. The UN Representative will have a working meeting with the Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and will be received by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 28 April.
The announcements came before the UN’s subsequent appeal to stop the war in Ukraine. Earlier, the UN chief has written separate letters to the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to meet them in their respective capitals.
The UN chief will also meet the UN staff to discuss the scaling up of humanitarian assistance to the people in the war zone.
War in Ukraine:
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has resulted in massive displacement and casualties in the last 57 days. Mariupol has endured the worst devastation among the encircled cities in Ukraine, as thousands of civilians have died in the city. The General Assembly has repeatedly expressed its concerns over the humanitarian crisis due to war. The humanitarian assistance organizations have requested access to surrounding cities to aid the war-struck nation.
Recently, the President of Ukraine has warned that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is the beginning and that Moscow has designs on capturing other countries.
