Beirut, 11 February 2022 (TDI): Resident and Humanitarian UN Coordinator for Lebanon, Najat Rochdi, condemned hate speech. Najat Rochdi took to Twitter on Thursday to condemn the hate speech which she described as a threat to Lebanon’s peace. 

Moreover, she is the Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon. Najat Rochdi brings over 20 years of experience in development and humanitarian assistance, in international coordination in conflict and post-conflict areas. 

In addition, she brings her experience through her latest assignment as Senior Adviser to the Special Envoy for Syria and lastly, Director of Peer to Peer with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Geneva. 

In her tweet, she declared: “I strongly condemn the ongoing hate speech on social media, particularly purposefully organized and planned hostile rhetoric.”

Anyway, the UN Coordinator urged Lebanese leaders to have zero tolerance to this malicious act. She also called upon authorities to treat it as a serious threat to Lebanon’s peace, stability & recovery.

She continued by saying that, “the proliferation of hate speech in Lebanon is a flagrant breach to its cultural diversity. Nonetheless, it diminishes the values of coexistence that Lebanese hold.”

Lastly, she ended her tweet by stressing that “Opposing opinions are healthy but personal attacks are Not! We must counter-narratives of hate speech and embrace diversity in debates.”
