ISLAMABAD (TDI): A United Nations (UN) expert has condemned the death of Dr. Ziad Eldalou, the third Palestinian doctor in Israeli custody.
Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, condemned the death of the doctor and call for the protection of healthcare workers in the occupied Palestinian territories.
Dr Eldalou, an internal medicine physician at the Al-Shifa Medical Complex, was reportedly detained by Israeli forces during a raid on the hospital on March 18, 2024.

He died just three days later, on March 21, raising serious concerns about the treatment of medical professionals in the region.

Mofokeng, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, expressed her outrage in a statement, denouncing Israel’s “blatant disregard for the right to health in Gaza and the occupied territories.
” Her statement comes just days before the one-year anniversary of rising tension between Israel and Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of large number of health workers.
Mofokeng highlighted the disturbing trend of violence against medical personnel, noting that Dr. Eldalou’s death follows that of two other Palestinian physicians since October 2023.

She also said that over 885 healthcare workers lost their lives in Gaza and the West Bank. Several other nurses, paramedics, doctors, and other medical staff have inured and the situation will further deteriorate, she said.
