Kingston, 1 October 2021 (TDI): Judith Slater, the Designated High Commissioner to Jamaica presented her credentials; to the Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica, Kamina Smith, on 30 September.
As shared by UK in Caribbean, this represented a major milestone in modern UK-Jamaica relations. Slater and Smith briefly spoke about climate action, Covid-19 recovery, and other mutual interests.
Jamaica is part of the Commonwealth, alongside 53 other countries, the country entered shortly after its independence in 1962. The objective of the Commonwealth is the politic and economic international cooperation.
The head of the organization is Queen Elizabeth. According to the webpage of the Royal Family, Queen Elizabeth is the Queen of Jamaica and the Chief of State but the Governor-General represents her.
The former role of Slater was Consul-General and Trade Commissioner for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, in Istanbul. Slater expressed that it was an honor to have her first official engagement in Jamaica. Smith replied that likewise and that she was looking forward to a productive partnership.
Finally, Smith mentioned that Slater is the first woman to hold the post since the commencement of diplomatic relations in 1962. Smith also mentioned that discussions were mor involved, therefore she considered it a positive sign.
