In a statement issued by the Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations, UAE expressed deep concern over the current situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Damage has been caused to critical infrastructure at Zaporizhzhia, including to the external power supply system, and radiation sensors.
These development shows the disastrous consequences not only for Ukraine, but for the whole world. The statement added.
UAE also called for special protection of Nuclear facilities under International Law, citing Article 56 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions. According to this protocol, works or installations containing dangerous forces i.e. dams, dykes and nuclear stations can not attack, notwithstanding they are military targets.
“These facilities are protected under international law for a reason,” Deputy Permanent Representative Mohamed Abushahab said in the Security Council. He further added that they are critical civilian infrastructure. Also, when Nuclear facilities become vulnerable, human lives are also at risk.
IAEA warning:
On Thursday, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi warned that the situation in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has deteriorated rapidly. He has also called on to stop the attacks jeopardizing Nuclear safety.
I’ve told #UNSC today that the situation at #Zaporizhzya NPP was alarming. Military actions jeopardizing nuclear safety and security must stop immediately. An @iaeaorg mission would allow us to carry out needed technical activities and provide a stabilizing influence.

The IAEA representative warned that military actions near Europe’s largest Nuclear power would have severe consequences.
The IAEA has received contradictory information about the facility’s status from Ukraine and Russia. He said during his address to the Security Council via video link.
Due to the contradictory reports, IAEA is unable to corroborate the assessment without physical presence on the site. He added.
