Turkmenistan hosts meeting on "International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace”

Ashgabat, 31 January 2023 (TDI): The Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan holds a ceremony declaring 2023 as the “International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace”.

The event was held in hybrid mode. Representatives from the United Nations (UN) and its specialized agencies, as well as UN member states, and international and regional organizations, attended the event.

Turkmenistan initiated the declaration of 2023 under the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 77/32. This initiative is directly related to the UN Secretary General’s “New Peace Agenda” for promoting peace.

It is consonant with the ambition of Turkmenistan to promote the philosophy of “Dialogue as a guarantee of peace”.

Overview of the ceremony

Prestigious diplomats thanked Turkmenistan’s government in their speeches for its consistent efforts to promote a culture of peace worldwide.

They emphasized that this International Year has a solid cornerstone: Dialogue for Peace, which is based on shared belief. Open and sincere interactions can indeed promote mutual understanding between people.

Turkmenistan held extensive consultations with UN member countries before presenting the draft resolution. The resolution was co-sponsored by 68 of the Organization’s member countries.

The final document was adopted as an official document of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, under agenda item 14 “Culture of Peace.”

It reflects the principles of the UN Charter, including obligations to resolve disputes through peaceful means and methods.

Dialogue as a guarantee of peace

Turkmenistan’s Global Initiative “Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace” aims to consolidate the international community’s efforts in strengthening the peaceful coexistence of the world’s peoples.

It also seeks to restore values and worldviews, establishing a culture of peace and trust as essential to international relations.

After the ceremony, the participants expressed their heartfelt appreciation to the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov for pursuing a peace and friendship policy in international relations.
