Istanbul, 29 June 2022 (TDI): Turkish drone manufacturer, Baykar Defense, offered three of its drones to Ukrainian Army on Monday. The announcement came after a crowdfunding campaign in Ukraine raised funds to buy “several” of the Bayraktar TB2 model.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the company noted that a crowdfunding campaign had raised enough money to buy several of its TB2 UAVs “for Ukrainians to use in defense of their homeland”.

“Baykar will not accept payment for TB2s, and will send 3 UAVs free of charge to the Ukrainian war front” it added. “We ask the raised funds to be remitted instead to struggling people of Ukraine”.

This could be significant progress for Ukraine which previously said that the Turkish drones it had at the start of the war proved useful against the Russian forces.

Remarks of the Director:

Following the announcement, Baykar’s director, Selcuk Bayraktar, shared the news on Twitter and expressed his hope for the end of the war and a resolution.

The announcement comes as NATO member, Turkiye, is blocking the membership bids of Finland and Sweden. On this issue, Turkish President Erdogan stated his willingness to give safe haven to outlawed Kurdish militants. These militants’ decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

While Turkiye has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has also tried to stay neutral. Accordingly, it has not signed up for the sanctions by the United States and European Union on Moscow.

Previously, at the beginning of June, Baykar also offered Lithuania a free combat drone. The purpose was to make the funds raised by Lithuanians for the purchase of arms go to humanitarian aid.
