Trilateral Seminar Report on Bay of Bengal

New Delhi, 12 August 2023 (TDI): Asian Confluence held a Trilateral Seminar on the Bay of Bengal with the cooperation of the Embassy of Japan, New Delhi, on Friday.

The theme of the report was “Towards a Connected and Prosperous Bay of Bengal Region: Perspective on North East India and Bangladesh Connectivity.”

A detailed report was released at the event, titled “Assessing Connectivity between Northeast India and Bangladesh: Towards a Prosperous Bay of Bengal Region.”

Asian Confluence conducted research for the report on connectivity between Northeast India and Bangladesh.

The report was established on inputs based on field visits, surveys, and consultations.

The report was finalized based on the Third India-Japan Intellectual Conclave held in Agartala, Tripura, on 11 and 12 April 2023.

Remarks

Ambassador of Japan to India, Hiroshi Suzuki, High Commission of Bangladesh to India, Mustafizur Rahman, Joint Secretary (Bangladesh, Myanmar) Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, Smita Pant, and many other high-level officials attended the event.

In the opening remarks, Hiroshi Suzuki highlighted the importance of developing a new industrial value chain in the region and progress and prosperity under FOIP.

He stressed that the upcoming deep seaport in Bangladesh would be an innovative step in the Bay of Bengal region.

Mustafizur Rahman emphasized the importance of the strategic role of Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal.

He focused to increase air connectivity and people-to-people connectivity along with road, rail, and water connectivity.

Smita Pant underscored the progress made by India and Bangladesh in increasing trade and developing more connectivity projects between India and Bangladesh.

She said that Bangladesh can use Kolkata and New Delhi airports for their exports, but there is need to focus on the railway.

Aditya Mishra, Chairman of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAIL), informed the participants of the cooperation of LPAI and Bangladesh Land Port Authority (BLPA) on matters of mutual interest.
