The second Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD, will take place in Yokohama. This would happen in August of next year, as announced by the Japanese government.
Every three years, Tokyo organizes a conference on development and assistance for Africa. The ninth conference will take place in Japan in 2025.
Three-day TICAD-9 conference
During a Cabinet meeting on Friday, the government accepted the idea to host the TICAD conference for three days, August 20–22, in a place close to Tokyo.
Yokohama will serve as the conference’s location for the fourth time.
Japan is “a partner growing together with Africa,” the Japanese government declared at the TICAD conference in Tunisia in 2022, pushing for public and private sector investment as well as people training for the continent.
Hayashi emphasized the significance of TICAD 9 in fostering closer ties with Africa. Moreover, he highlighted the continent’s potential for dynamic growth and its increasing role in the global arena.
Scheduled for Aug 20, 2025, the three-day TICAD 9 aligns with Tokyo’s efforts to enhance cooperation. This would grow China’s influence over developing and emerging nations.
TICAD, jointly organized by Japan, the United Nations, the World Bank, and the UN
Since 2013, the Development Program and the African Union Commission have been holding triennial meetings. They provided a significant platform for dialogue and collaboration.
Leading up to the summit, ministerial discussions between Japan and African nations are scheduled for this year in Tokyo, with the aim of establishing a foundation for productive engagements and partnerships.
