Togo, China discuss enhanced Economic Cooperation

Lome, 2 July 2022 (TDI): Togolese Prime Minister, Victoire Sidémého Tomegah Dogbé received the Director-General of the Department of African Affairs of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wu Peng.

The meeting was held to discuss prospects of an enhanced economic partnership between China and Togo. The two countries recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The Chinese official, who is also the Chair of the Forum on China-Africa Affairs monitoring committee, briefed about the trade volume between the two countries at the occasion.

In 2020 the bilateral trade volume between the two amounted to $2 billion which has shown economic tremendous growth of 33% increasing the bilateral trade in 2021 to $3 billion.

Wu Peng said that the growth rates reflect that Togo-China economic partnership holds potential and should be enhanced in the future.

The two officials agreed on the online promotion of Togo to Chinese conglomerates in the latter half of the year to attract Chinese foreign direct investment in the country.

The Chinese official also met Minister and Secretary-General of the Togolese Presidency Sandra Alabama Johnson.

The two sides also talked about revamped Chinese investment within the country and the implementation of several Chinese projects. The projects would deal with agriculture, water, and attracting Chinese FDI in the region.

The Chinese official was also concerned about the security scenario in West Africa which could threaten Chinese investments.
