Lome, 29 June 2022 (TDI): The year 2022 marks the fifth decade after China and Togo commemorated diplomatic relations.

To celebrate the remarkable milestone, the Director-General of Department of African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of China, Wu Peng paid a visit to Togo on Wednesday.

In Lome, Wu Peng had a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Togo, Robert Dussey, and the Secretary-General of Togo’s Foreign Ministry, Afo Ousmane Salifou.

The visit also resulted in the cancellation of Togo’s 16 million RMB loan repayment to China. The officials also exchanged congratulatory messages to mark the fifty years of friendship and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

An Overview of China-Togo Bilateral Friendship

China and Togo are historic allies. The two countries cemented official diplomatic relations in 1972. Since then, the two countries have comprehensively enhanced their bilateral relations in various of the fields.

Both sides have been facilitating the tie of trade and investment. Moreover, China and Togo have cooperated in numerous exchanges with regard to culture, health, education, and military affairs.

The two countries further deepened economic and political ties in 2018. At that time,  Togo formally joined the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) organized by China.

Furthermore, Togo has also firmly adhered on its part to the One China Policy, supported China’s stance on Tibet and Taiwan. Also, Togo backed up the Hong Kong National Security Law in the United Nations in 2022.

Wu Peng’s visit to Togo is one of the series of his visits to African countries recently. The official has been visiting throughout Africa recently to develop friendly cooperation between China and African states.

He has paid a visit to the Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso where both sides discussed economic development and peace.

While China-Senegal cooperation under Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) was the highlight on another visit to the Diplomatic Adviser of Senegal.

Also, consensus on a number of issues was also developed during a high-level meeting with the Zambian President and the continuous development of China-Malawi relations was underscored in a visit to Malawi.

It is worth mentioning that this year also marks the 58th anniversary of China-Tanzania diplomatic relations.
