The award was for the first time awarded in 1956, and since then, the award is being awarded on an annual basis to the player having the best on and off-field performances and overall behavior. The current holder of this prestigious award is the Argentine forward Lionel Messi.
Messi is the player with the most Ballon D’Or (six) in the history of football, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo (five). The winner is selected by the votes of hundreds of journalists and football players from all around the world.
Last year, due to Covid-19, the awards were forced canceled. However, this year following the performances: Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema, and Robert Lewandowski are the favorites to win the trophy.
Today, France Football has also announced that this year two new awards will be awarded while keeping the awards and the nominees a secret for all.
Most decorated footballer
The Ballon d’Or is one of the most prestigious awards of the football world. Many have won the trophy once or twice. However, the Ex Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has grabbed the award for a record six times, and today, he is expected to create new history by winning it for the seventh time.
From 2009-12, Lionel Messi won four consecutive Ballon D’Or, then he won it in 2015, and then in 2019. This year, after witnessing his impressive performance and winning Copa America for Argentina, many experts believe that Lionel Messi is going to grab the trophy for a record seventh time.
