Sri Lankan Foreign Minister talks with UN Resident Coordinator

Colombo, 3 September 2021 (TDI): Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Gamini Lakshman Peiris made a courtesy call to the United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC), Hanaa Singer-Hamdy.

Foreign Minister Peiris congratulated the UNRC and the UN for their constructive and continued cooperation in the framework of Sri Lanka’s national development priorities and needs in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He informed the UNRC about Sri Lanka’s ongoing attempts to contain the Covid-19 outbreak, as well as the hurdles it faces. Peiris made sure to praise the UN’s efforts, especially UNICEF and WHO, as well as the help provided by the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank. The Minister also provided an update to the UNRC on human rights progress made through domestic processes, particularly SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Institutions.

The UNRC informed the Minister on the preparations being made by Sri Lanka and the UN under the Sustainable Development Partnership Framework 2023–2027, which encapsulates Sri Lanka’s priorities in cooperation with the UN for the next five years.
