Washington D.C., 29 October 2021 (TDI): Ham Sang Wook met with the United States (US) Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, Bonnie Jenkins.

He is the Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs of South Korea (Republic of Korea-ROK).

Bilateral Disarmament and Nonproliferation Consultation

The meeting was held in Washington D.C. It was a High-Level Bilateral Disarmament and Nonproliferation Consultation. Such a meeting was the first time under the Biden-Harris Administration.

Exchange of Views

The consultation was a follow-up to the May 2021 U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit. Therefore, the two sides reaffirmed to enhance multidimensional mutual cooperation.

They exchanged extensive views on nonproliferation and global security. Civil use of nuclear energy also came under discussion.

The two agreed to continue working together because they share a common goal.

Common Outlook

South Korea and the US share a common outlook on global disarmament and nonproliferation. Hence, both underscored their commitment to reinforce the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

10th NPT RevCon

The 10th Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference (RevCon) will happen in January 2022. The US and South Korea both will be attending the RevCon.

Thomas Countryman also met with Ham Sang Wook. He is the International Security and Nonproliferation Bureau Senior Advisor of the US. 10th NPT Review Conference and mutual priorities came under discussion.

5th Space Security Dialogue

Furthermore, Ham Sang Wook and Bonnie Jenkins confirmed their commitment to launching international norms and cooperation via the 5th Space Security Dialogue. The Dialogue will be held in Seoul, next year.
