Dhaka, 8 May 2023: The 11th South-Asia Economic Policy Network Conference, namely Social Progress in South Asia, is scheduled to take place in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 9th to 10th May 2023.
Office of the Chief Economist for the South Asia Region, Poverty and Equity Practice Group of the World Bank and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) will host the event.
The two-day hybrid event will bring together experts and thought leaders. The experts and thought leaders will discuss the crucial topic of Inequality of Opportunity and Intergenerational Mobility in South Asia.

This event will feature a presentation on the main findings of the World Bank’s South Asia Economic Focus Spring 2023.
There will also be a keynote lecture by a Professor of Economics at Harvard University, Raja Chetty and a paper presentation.
The expert panel discussion will take place on May 10. Hussain Zill ur Rehman, Chairperson of BRAC Bangladesh, will be the Session Chair. Maurizio Bussolo, lead Economist South Asia Region World Bank, will be the presenter.
The panelists of the discussion are Abdul Baki, Member(Secretary), Bangladesh Planning Commission, Shaheen Anum, Executive Director, Manusher Jonno Foundation, Imran Matin, Executive Director BIGD, BRAC University and Nasir Gazdar, Director and Senior Researcher, Collective for Social Science Research Pakistan.
The conference aims to address the persistent disparities that pose a significant threat to the achievement of development goals and the eradication of poverty in the region. The countries in South Asia face high inequality of opportunity and very low social mobility.
