Singapore welcomes US commitment to engage ASEAN

Singapore, 20 October 2021 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Singapore, Vivian Balakrishan welcomed the US’ commitments in its constructive engagement with ASEAN. He held a meeting with the US State Department Counselor Derek Chollet. Derek Chollet is in the country as part of his visit to the region.

In a series of tweets Vivian said that the US supported ASEAN’s decision to invite non-political entities of Myanmar to the organizational summit last week. Earlier this week ASEAN decided to invite non-political entities from the coup ravaged country; Myanmar.

Also, both the leaders discussed the longstanding relationships on a bilateral level. US mission of deepening economic engagements in the region, were also discussed in the meeting.

The United States and Singapore are long-time strategic partners. The two share strong tradition of collaboration for peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia and beyond. The bilateral relationship is 55 years old and encompasses deep economic, cultural, and security ties.
