Islamabad (TDI): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday congratulated Mark Joseph Carney on his election as the Prime Minister of Canada and extended felicitations to the Liberal Party on their victory in the elections.
“Congratulations to Mark J Carney on his election as the Prime Minister of Canada, and to the Liberal Party on their success in the recently held elections. Pakistan and Canada enjoy warm and friendly relations and we are proud of the vibrant Pakistani diaspora in Canada,” the prime minister said in a post on X.
The PM said that he looked forward to working together with Prime Minister Carney to further deepen ties between Pakistan and Canada and create greater opportunities for their countries.
Canada’s governing Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Mark Carney won the national elections for a fourth term in a significant comeback prompted in part by unprecedented attacks by US President Donald Trump.
Carney beat opposition Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre on Monday after millions of Canadians voted in snap polls.
After assuming the office, Carney soon announced snap election and dissolved the Parliament. He and his party wanted to be sure of the public trust in Carney and his cabinet, as the country now heads toward a decisive policy on trade and tariffs with the US.

Having won the mandate, Carney will not need to be sworn in again. However, he may choose to make changes to his cabinet.
Politically and economically, this is an important time for the country, as its largest trading partner is hell-bent on making trade costlier and difficult.
Historically, Canada has benefitted from its geographical proximity to the US but Trump changed that. In the only telephonic conversation between Mark Carney and Donald Trump, both leaders agreed that after the election, they will start negotiating “a new economic and security relationship.”

The negotiation phase is expected to be tough as President Trump has threatened Canada with annexation, making it the 51st state of the US.
The election result, however, has clearly demonstrated Canadians’ will to be led by Carney in these important negotiations.
