Brussels, 28 September 2021 (TDI): Josep Borrell Fontelles, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Union Commission, said that he is closely monitoring the situation in the North of Kosovo.
Serbia and Kosovo, Josep believes, must quickly de-escalate the situation on the ground by removing special police forces and dismantling roadblocks. Any additional provocations or acts that are unilateral and uncoordinated are not acceptable.
Vice President Borrell added that he strongly encourage Kosovo and Serbia to utilize the EU-facilitated Dialogue to discuss and settle all outstanding problems between the parties, particularly those on freedom of movement and license plates. The fact that both Chief Negotiators will be in Brussels in the coming days is a first step in the right direction. They must arrive with a mandate to explore the path forward and develop long-term solutions that benefit residents.
In his discussions with President Vucic and Prime Minister Kurti this week, he emphasized that Kosovo and Serbia must find a way to defuse the tension and come to an agreement on how to proceed. These initiatives will be actively supported by the EU. Both Kosovo’s and Serbia’s authorities bear full responsibility for any threats to the safety and well-being of local populations.
VP Borrell is in constant communication with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, whom he expresses gratitude for the good collaboration between KFOR and EULEX. In the Western Balkans, KFOR plays a critical role in maintaining regional stability.
