Secretary Blinken Spoke with Qatar’s Foreign Minister

Washington, 6 October 2021 (TDI): On Tuesday, the US State Department announced the telephonic encounter between US State Secretary Antony J. Blinken and Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The officials discussed bilateral relations between Washington and Doha along with the latest developments in Afghanistan.

Secretary Blinken commended Qatar for its relentless efforts in facilitating the safe evacuation of US citizens, vulnerable individuals, and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) from Kabul. They further shared a mutual commitment to making credible efforts in stabilizing Afghanistan. During the conversation, Antony Blinken praised Doha for its role in strengthening bilateral relations with the United States, resulting in a devoted and cordial partnership between the two countries.

The United States marked the withdrawal of its remnant troops from Kabul during August, concluding its twenty-year war on terrorism. Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan, the top officials including President Ghani fled the country, and the chaotic power grab led to one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with countless civilians trying to flee Afghanistan to date.
