Geneva, 29 August 2022 (TDI): The 2nd United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Illicit Trade Forum will be hosted from 6th-7th September 2022.

UNCTAD will host the second iteration of the Illicit Trade Forum in collaboration with the Transnational Alliance to Combat Illicit Trade (TRACIT).

Illicit trade is a transnational problem holding back progress on various SDGs. The UNCTAD trade forum brings about discussions on how governments can defend their economies against illicit trade.

Agenda of the Forum

The two-day UNCTAD forum will address the issues of illicit trade. It will bring in interactive panel discussions on illicit trade in times of crisis and mitigating illicit trade through maritime transport. Moreover, trade in falsified medicines and illicit financial flows related to trade, tax, and criminal activities would also be under discussion.

The UNCTAD session intends to formulate policies and implement programs that deter illicit trade from taking root in the post-crisis economy. In addition, countering the abuse of containerized maritime transport in illicit trade is also considered.

The session will highlight best practices of governance and cooperation to counter falsified trade in medicines that are dangerous for health and development.

The UNCTAD forum invites representatives from stakeholders involved in African pilot countries to share their experiences on trade-related Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs). IFFs cover a wide range of different activities, including drug markets, terrorist financing, and aggressive tax avoidance.

The session targets representatives from customs and revenue authorities, central banks, anti-corruption agencies, financial intelligence, criminal justice bodies, and national statistics offices.

The UNCTAD secretariat presents a series of programs of potential areas for cooperation and collaboration to address illicit trade.

Moreover, the session encourages an active dialogue involving several stakeholders. It includes member states and representatives from IGOs, NGOs, academia, and the private sector.
