Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Visited Mexico

Mexico City, 1 December 2021 (TDI): The Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, and Energy Secretary, Rocio Nahle, met with the Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia, Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud, on Monday.

The meeting came as part of the Saudi envoy’s first visit to Mexico City. The officials discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields during the session.

Apart from Marcelo Ebrard, the Mexcian delegation included other officials of the state’s Foreign Ministry, such as Carmen Moreno Toscano, the Undersecretary of Foreign Relations, and Martha Delgado Peralta, the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights.

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Al Saud was accompanied by the Saudi Ambassador to Mexico, Haytham Al Malki, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Investment, and the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) representatives.

Areas of Discussion

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Riyadh and Mexico City in the energy and development sectors. Moreover, the officials reaffirmed working together on multilateral forums, such as the Group of Twenty (G20) and the United Nations (UN).

The two sides anticipated strengthening commercial ties, particularly through promoting the agricultural and tourism sectors. They also discussed ways to improvise trade missions with investment potential in both countries by the year 2022.

During the meeting, Marcelo Ebrard emphasized the importance of the Government of Mexico’s transformation projects to achieve a fairer society and a more balanced regional development. This included infrastructure projects in Southern Mexico and the Sembrando Vida program.

Lastly, the officials expressed mutual commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in view of the ’70th anniversary’ of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Saudi Arabia approaching next year.
