In a First for Pakistan’s Women Cricket, Sana Mir Lands in the ICC Hall of Fame

Islamabad (TDI): Former Pakistan women’s cricket team captain, Sana Mir, made history on Monday by becoming the first female cricketer from Pakistan to be added to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame.

Sana Mir, who reached the top of the ICC Women’s One Day International (ODI) bowling rankings in 2018, also led Pakistan to gold medals at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014.

Her rise in international cricket came at a time when sport opportunities for Pakistani women were just beginning to open up, especially since many were not allowed to play in open grounds before the early 2000s.

Since making her debut in 2005, Sana Mir played in 226 international matches. She is one of only nine women in ODI history to have scored over 1,000 runs and taken more than 100 wickets — a rare achievement for an all-rounder.

“When I was a little girl, I used to dream that one day we would have a women’s cricket team in Pakistan. Now, standing here and being included among legends I admired even before I picked up a bat or ball — it’s a moment I could never have imagined,” Sana Mir said in a statement shared by the ICC.

“I feel truly honored and hope I can give back to the sport in any way I can. I want to thank my teammates, coaches, and family for always supporting me,” she added.

This year, Sana Mir is one of the seven legendary players included in the ICC Hall of Fame. The other new members are MS Dhoni (India), Matthew Hayden (Australia), Daniel Vettori (New Zealand), Sarah Taylor (England), and Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith (South Africa).

The announcement was made at a grand ceremony held at Abbey Road Studios in London, where ICC Chairman Jay Shah officially welcomed the new inductees.

Speaking at the event, Jay Shah said: “The ICC Hall of Fame honors the best players in cricket history — people whose great careers have left a lasting impact on the game and inspired others.”

“This year, we are proud to welcome seven amazing individuals. On behalf of the ICC, I warmly congratulate each one of them. This is a well-earned recognition and a special moment in their cricket journey,” he continued.
