Russian Language Day Celebrated in Pakistan

Islamabad (TDI): To celebrate Russian Language Day, the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) held a phonetic competition among students enrolled in Russian language courses, organized with the support of the Russian Ministry of Education.

The contestants recited Russian tongue twisters, demonstrating fluency and clarity of pronunciation. The winners also received prizes. Russian Language Day is celebrated every year on June 6.

During the event, representatives from the Russian Embassy informed interested participants about studying at Russian universities and answered questions about scholarships and life in Russia.

Back home in Russia, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also gave a message on the Russian Language Day. He said: “Further strengthening of the position of the Russian language in the world remains among the unconditional priorities of our humanitarian foreign policy.”

June 6 is the birthdate of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, who is considered by many to be the greatest Russian poet, as well as the founder of modern Russian literature.

The Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the UN’s Department of Global Communications, establishing language days for each of the Organization’s six official languages, which are French, Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic, and Russian.

This day is usually celebrated with various activities like literary events, festivals, and discussions, aiming to promote the Russian language and culture.

The Russian language is spoken by millions worldwide. It is the eighth most spoken language across the globe. Not only do 170 million Russian natives speak this language, but there are also another 130 million people from former republics of the now-defunct Soviet Union that speak Russian.

Interestingly, there are more expressions for different shades of blue in Russian that they are in any other language. There are descriptions for dark shades and descriptions for light shades too.
