Russia’s African Tour
Since the Ukraine War, the grains blockade had greatly affected the African States. After the deal of Ukrainian grains exports resumption, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Cairo for the first time.
Russian Foreign Minister held a meeting with the Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit for the improvement of Russian and Arab relations.
It took into consideration the recent international and regional developmental concerns amid the Ukraine crisis. They also discussed the enhancement of the Cairo and Moscow cooperation.
As Egypt is one of the chief importers of wheat in the world, the Ukrainian crisis came as a financial shock to Egypt as it imported more than 80 percent of its wheat from Ukraine and Russia until last year.
The Russian Foreign Minister offered Egypt consolation regarding the uncertainty of Ukraine’s grain export resumption in this meeting.
According to Lavrov, in order to distort the truth the Western Nations were blaming Russia for the global food crisis so that they could exert their dominance. His visit to Cairo was a part of the African Diplomacy trip as well.
A Balancing Act
The war in Ukraine has greatly affected the African states. However, when the Russia-Ukraine war broke out in February, Egypt decided not to take any sides as it has strong relations with the West as well as Russia.
This visit of Russia’s Foreign Minister was also because of the Rosatom project i.e. Russia’s state-owned atomic energy corporation is building a four reactor power plant in Egypt whose construction began last week.
