Beijing, 8 April 2024 (TDI): Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s official visit to China marks a significant step in strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia, despite mounting pressure from the United States.

Arriving in Beijing on Monday at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Lavrov’s visit aims to enhance bilateral ties, foster cooperation across various sectors, and address international issues of mutual concern amidst the 75th anniversary of China-Russia diplomatic relations.

During his visit, Lavrov is set to engage in discussions with Wang. He focused on topics such as the situation in Ukraine, and Asia-Pacific affairs. Moreover, he discussed bilateral cooperation and global interactions, as reported.

Experts anticipate Lavrov’s visit as a precursor to potential engagements between Chinese and Russian leaders. This includes President Putin’s expected trip to China in May, as reported by Reuters in March.

In light of recent events, including a terrorist attack in Moscow and security challenges faced by Chinese engineers in Pakistan, both nations share common concerns about terrorism.

Collaboration within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and other platforms is crucial for regional peace and stability, emphasized experts.

Meanwhile, amidst US-China-Russia trilateral dynamics, US Secretary of Treasury Janet Yellen’s visit to China raised concerns about potential repercussions for Chinese companies related to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.

In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated China’s constructive mediation efforts to resolve the conflict and emphasized the importance of respecting China-Russia relations.

The two navigated complex trilateral relations. They maintained flexibility while safeguarding national interests remains a priority, analysts noted.
